In December 2019, a new strain of the coronavirus was identified in Wuhan, China. By mid-February 2020, the virus had spread to over 40,000 people globally, primarily in China, with 13 confirmed cases in six U.S. states. As the virus continued to proliferate, it brought attention to the growing demand for natural products, particularly those marketed for their immune-supporting properties, such as vitamins and herbal supplements.
Although some companies unscrupulously claimed to offer cures for the virus, credible trade organizations like the Natural Products Association (NPA) condemned these false claims. The president of NPA emphasized that consumers should avoid products that claim to prevent, treat, or cure the coronavirus, advising concerned individuals to report such misleading claims to the FDA.
Amidst this backdrop, industry professionals expressed growing consumer interest in supplements aimed at boosting immunity. One industry representative noted the efforts people make to protect themselves, including enhanced measures like wearing multiple layers of masks. Despite this demand, the representative stressed that dietary supplements should not be promoted as preventatives or cures for the virus.
Retailers across various locations observed heightened consumer interest in immune-supporting products, recommending items such as elderberry, oregano oil, zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin D to support immune health. Other products like black seed oil, propolis extract, and probiotics were also mentioned as popular choices for bolstering immunity.
Executives from companies supplying nutritional and herbal ingredients noted logistical challenges due to travel restrictions. However, they confirmed that arrangements were made to ensure adequate supply by acquiring and processing ingredients according to standards ahead of such disruptions.
Additionally, the demand for immune support products always peaks during the cold and flu season or when health issues are publicly highlighted. Retailers emphasized focusing on general immune health through diet, proper sleep, and hygiene practices.
